How search works

Every word you type must match somewhere on the record: its title, its artist, an instrument, a maker or a role. So "juno bass 1983" finds a record only if all three match. Search is typo tolerant, so "jonu" still finds the Juno. When Meilisearch is available it also ranks results by relevance and popularity; otherwise the site falls back to an ordinary database search with the same word matching.

Prefixes

Put a field name before a word to search just that field. Use quotes around a name with a space in it.

  • artist:"new order" - only this artist
  • instrument:juno - only records naming an instrument matching this
  • role:bass - only this role
  • year:1983 - only this year
  • decade:80s - only this decade
  • status:verified - only this status
  • player:"vince clarke" - only records with this person credited as a performer
  • producer: - same as player:, for a producer, engineer, mixer or arranger credit

A prefix can repeat ("artist:muse artist:queen") and mixes freely with ordinary words: "artist:\"new order\" 1983" finds this artist's 1983 records.

Filters

The sidebar filters and the search prefixes are the same thing, just two ways in. Every filter narrows the results, and different filters combine: pick a maker and a decade and you get records that match both. Inside one filter, picking more than one value widens it: tick two roles and you get records with either.

Statuses

A claim is VERIFIED, POTENTIALLY, awaiting review, unverified or disputed depending on its sources; a record with no claim at all is WANTED. Tick Wanted under Status to see those too. The full evidential standard is on the standard page.

Sort

Records sort by relevance by default (best word match first, then popularity). You can also sort by newest, oldest, artist, title or best evidence first. Instruments, artists and people have their own sort options suited to those tables.

Infinite scroll

More rows load automatically as you scroll down. A pill in the bottom-left corner shows infinite scroll is on and lets you turn it off, which switches back to page numbers at the foot of the table.

Random

The Random link in the header jumps to one record, instrument or artist picked at random from the whole wiki, any status, wanted included.
