A bass in the lush, layered synth-pop arrangements of the pre-Spirit of Eden records: a Prophet-5/Jupiter-8 stack over a string-machine bed, played with restraint and mixed to breathe rather than dominate. Mark Hollis's band pulled back from synths after Colour of Spring, so this era is where the electronic textures are richest.
