Terms
Synth.Directory is run by Box Of Rules, a sole trader in Brighton, England. These terms cover reading the wiki and contributing to it. The version you agreed to is stored on every claim, source, edit and image you submit.
1. Everything here is submitted by contributors
Every claim, source, link, quotation, setting, correction and image on this wiki is user-submitted content. It is written, chosen and uploaded by contributors, not by Box Of Rules. Box Of Rules provides the platform, the evidential standard and a review step that checks submissions against that standard. That review is a check on evidence and on the licence a contributor declares. It is not a legal clearance, it is not a statement that the content is accurate, and it does not make Box Of Rules the author or publisher of the content.
- Presets: you may only upload settings you made yourself. Factory banks and third-party commercial preset packs are not accepted and are removed on notice.
2. No responsibility for user content
Box Of Rules is not responsible for user-submitted content and does not accept liability for it. In particular Box Of Rules does not warrant and is not liable for: the accuracy or completeness of any claim, source or setting; the content of any external site a source or reference link points to (those sites are not ours and we do not control them); any image, its licence, or the correctness of the credit a contributor supplied; any loss or damage arising from reliance on the wiki. Use the wiki at your own risk. Nothing here is advice. The wiki is provided as is and as available, without warranty of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
3. Rights holders: notice and takedown
If you believe content on this wiki infringes your copyright, database right, trade mark or another right, or is wrong about you, tell us and we will act on it. Write to [email protected] (see Corrections and takedown for what to include). We operate a notice-and-takedown procedure that meets the requirements of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the UK and EU rules on hosted content: on a valid notice we remove or disable access to the material promptly, tell the contributor who submitted it, and accept a counter-notice from them. A claim under complaint is marked DISPUTED while it is looked at. Contributors whose submissions are repeatedly the subject of valid notices lose the right to contribute.
4. What you grant when you contribute
The facts you contribute (an instrument, a role, a record, a year, a setting, a citation) are released under CC0 1.0: no rights reserved, free for anyone to reuse. Your own written words (notes, captions, descriptions) are released under CC BY 4.0: reusable with attribution to your contributor name. Images are released under the licence you declare for them (CC0, public domain, CC BY 4.0, CC BY-SA 4.0, or your own photograph released under CC BY 4.0). In addition you grant Box Of Rules a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, adapt, sublicense and commercialise your contributions, including inside Box Of Synths and its knowledge base, and you waive any moral rights in them so far as the law allows.
5. What you promise when you contribute
By submitting anything you confirm that: it is your own writing or a sourced fact; you have not pasted copyrighted text from an article, a book, a lyric or another database; you have not bulk-imported another database; any image you upload is under the licence you declare and the link you give shows it; the image is not an album cover, a press photograph, a magazine scan or a screenshot; and you are entitled to grant the rights in section 4. You are responsible for what you submit. You will compensate Box Of Rules for any loss, cost or claim that arises because a submission of yours broke these promises.
6. Contributor names and privacy
To contribute you choose a display name and a handle; both appear next to your contributions and on your public contributor page. Nothing else about your account is shown. You may erase your account at any time; facts you released under CC0 stay in the wiki and your credit becomes "a former contributor". Box Of Rules' privacy policy applies.
7. Moderation and the standard
A reviewer may accept, reject, edit or remove any submission at any time, including after it is published, when it does not meet the standard, breaks these terms, or is the subject of a complaint.
8. The wiki as a database
The wiki as a whole, as a compiled and reviewed database, is protected by database right and belongs to Box Of Rules. Individual facts released under CC0 remain free for anyone to reuse. Bulk extraction is governed by the licence stated on the export.
9. Names and marks
Artist, record, label and product names appear only to identify what a source reports. No endorsement by any artist, label, manufacturer or publisher is implied, and none exists. Trade marks belong to their owners.
10. Cookies
The wiki sets one strictly necessary cookie to keep you logged in, and one to remember your cookie choice. Google Analytics, which counts visits with IP addresses anonymised, is loaded only if you allow it in the cookie notice; you can withdraw that by clearing the site's cookies. There are no advertising cookies. The privacy page has the full list.
11. Changes and law
These terms may change; the version number and date at the top say when. A change applies to submissions made after it. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
