A tightly gated, resonant mono synth plays the driving arpeggiated hook that carries the record's disco pulse, doubled by the Mellotron strings for the choruses. The filter snaps shut on every eighth note rather than sustaining, keeping the pattern punchy against the four-on-the-floor drums. 'Weekend' topped the Dutch chart at the turn of 1979 into 1980 and was Earth and Fire's biggest disco crossover, a number-one hit also in Denmark, Germany, Portugal and Switzerland; the exact synth model is not documented, so this reconstructs the sound from the band's known ARP/Mellotron rig of the period.
