The famous four-note bass/lead riff is a Minimoog played through the amp flat with the filter static, which is what gives it its cold, unmoving edge rather than a swept or 'talking' filter sound. Numan has said the whole track grew out of a preset he stumbled on rather than deep programming. Keep the tone dry and the envelope tight.
