On this Release-era synth-pop track, a mono synth bass plays the root-note pulse that drives the whole track. Built from 1 square -1 through a LP 24 dB/oct filter (tight envelope with almost no movement), it sits in the mix true to the period's Nord Lead and early softsynths kept deliberately in the background of Johnny Marr's guitars-driven productions.
